"Most of those reports were a nightmare — grotesque, circumstantial, eager, and untrue. When Michaelis’s testimony at the inquest brought to light Wilson’s suspicions of his wife I thought the whole tale would shortly be served up in racy pasquinade — but Catherine, who might have said anything, didn’t say a word." | I feel like the most important theme of The Great Gatsby was the significance of appearance. Here the newspaper is only writing about what seems to have happened. Catherine does not dare say a word about her sisters affair. I think the trail represents everyone building a story for the sake of appearance. Michaelis only said what he heard secondhand and no one else said the truth. Everyone one was left believing different stories. (Haha the irony just occurred to me!) No one knew exactly how Gatsby lived his life before the parties and no one knew exactly how he died. This reveals to the reader that all the mess that was created by Gatsby was not cleaned up, but only covered up by lies like a blanket covering a stained sofa. |
